Australian Leaders Work To Preempt Gay Marriage Attempts
Australian Prime Minister John Howard is urging his government to rewrite laws
governing marriage in that nation in order to avoid being required by the courts
to recognize out-of-country gay marriages.
The Prime Minister is working with the parliament to rewrite the Marriage Act,
which was passed in 1961. The law will be revised to state that marriage is a
union between one man and one woman. The Australian Family Association is also
urging that the law stipulate that only biological males and females be allowed
to marry, in order to ban transsexuals from marrying.
The gay marriage issue arose in Australia over an Australian homosexual couple
who traveled to Canada to get married and planned on returning home to challenge
the marriage laws of Australia.
