Nigeria Faces Renewed HIV/AIDS
Epidemic From Homosexual Conduct

July 18, 2006 - The chairman of the National Action Committee on AIDS (NACA), Professor Babatunde Osotimehin, has recently issued a warning to Nigerians on the increase in homosexual conduct across the nation. This increase in homosexuality is viewed as a potential threat to efforts to control the spread of HIV/AIDS in that nation.

According to Osotimehin, the practice of risky sexual behaviors like homosexuality, lesbianism, multiple sex partners and non-use of condoms, increases the potential for the spread of HIV/AIDS. "The war against HIV/AIDS can only be won through preventive approach, much more than through treatment."

Osotimehin pointed to Uganda and Thailand as nations that have been able to keep infection rates low through prevention techniques.
