What's To Become Of Children In Gay Marriages?
June 18, 2004 - Catholic Standard & Times
correspondent Susan Brinkman has
just completed Part 5 of a six-part series on homosexuality for the Archdiocese
of Philadelphia newspaper.
In "Gay Marriage: Who's Minding the Children?", Brinkman begins
her article by stating that: "The whole issue of gay marriage can be summed up
in one word--children. According to Jeffrey Satinover, M.D., a psychiatrist and
member of the Department of Politics at Princeton University, there is no more
important reason to prohibit same-sex marriage than the effects it would have on
children. And he doesn't say this for sentimental reasons. He says it because
it's sound science."
Dr. Satinover says the legalization of gay marriage will create not just one new
social structure but two gay marriage institutions. He points out that there are
significant differences between gay male and gay female relationships. They have
different life spans, health issues, and behavioral characteristics. "They are
as different from one another as men are from women. If you were to create gay
marriage, you end up with three totally different marital entities" - meaning
gay male, gay female, and heterosexual marriages.
He notes that research clearly shows that children raised without fathers or
mothers experience different sets of social problems, yet governments are
deliberately creating institutions that create fatherless and motherless
families.
Satinover urges opposition to the legalization of gay marriages, not only for
children, but for the future of our culture.
