from Gay Activism in the Schools
Del Pinto was half-way through reading the book to her daughter when the zoo keeper in the story said the two penguins must be in love. The story is based upon two male penguins that raised a baby penguin as their own. The penguins, Roy and Silo, however, have split up after six years together. Roy is alone and Silo has a girlfriend.
Del Pinto and other parents have suggested that And Tango Makes Three should be placed on the library's regular shelves and require parental permission before it can be checked out by a child. School Superintendent Jennifer Filyaw considers the book "adorable" and appropriate for children ages 4 to 8.
NARTH President-Elect A. Dean Byrd, Ph.D. has observed: "There are significant differences between human sexuality and animal mounting behavior. There simply is not a good animal model for human sexual behavior. Pigs don't date, penguins don't go to church and fruit flies don't fall in love."
In Springfield, Missouri, Professor Frank Kaufmann has been disciplined for forcing Emily Brooker and other students to lobby for gay adoption. When Brooker refused to lobby, Kauffman charged her with a "Level 3 Grievance," which could have resulted in having her degree withheld.
The Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) came to Brooker's defense and the school settled out of court just a few weeks after it was threatened with an ADF lawsuit.
Professor Kaufmann has been removed from administrative duties and was put on non-teaching leave for the rest of the semester. Brooker's record has been cleansed.
